How to prepare for Boards with JEE Mains | Balancing Boards and Mains

Most asked questions by all JEE aspirants preparing for JEE as well as boards, how to maintain a balance between the two? Do we need to focus on boards at all? Do we leave the preparation of JEE and focus on boards? and so on.

In this post, I have tried to give you tips that will help you decide better for yourself.

We all know that since 2016 onwards boards do not have a determining effect in the JEE rank of a student and is just an eligibility criterion for JEE. So, even though you don't have to prepare to deliver your best in boards but certainly you must be prepared to be qualified to be in the top 20 percentile of respective boards.

Here are a few pointers that will be helpful for making a decision and were also followed by JEE Advance 2018,2017 toppers:

(1) Usually preboards are conducted in regular schools before 2-3 weeks of boards while there are no such tests in dummy schools. But as you have been preparing for PCM already in JEE you don't have to give a lot of effort for preparing boards. The time period of 2-3 weeks before boards is sufficient enough to start preparing for boards keeping aside

(2) Often students don't prepare for boards at all but they fail to understand that JEE Mains and boards have similar levels of concepts required. If you study for boards thoroughly it will be beneficial for JEE itself. Also, Chemistry of JEE Mains is straight from ncert textbooks. Math problems have the almost same base as in ncert books. The major gap is in Physics where boards usually require proofs and theoretical approach of the problem while Mains require numerical analytical problem-solving skills, so you need focus a little more on Physics for boards.

(3) You don't need to get confused as to which study material to study and just keep studying in parts trying to read all the materials. This also causes frustration as you don't get desire results as much as you have studied. Refer one or two books at a time it helps in focusing also and boost your confidence. For boards ncert book of that subject is sufficient.

(4) For subjects other than PCM, English and 5th subject going through their ncert books once and solving past papers and learning how to attempt by analyzing answers in more than sufficient and will only take 2-3 days per subject.

(5) Set days for each subject, or at most 2 subjects per day. If you think you can tackle and read all the subjects in one day if even one then that's not going to work. When you study a subject for just one hour and catch up from where you left on another day continuity breaks. Our mind is not quite good in storing half images, so instead sit for 2 hours in one day rather than 1 hour in 2 days.

(6) For remembering formulas or exceptions make a systematic table and paste on a place that you see the most. Writing formulas on your own will also help in remembering them and referring them regularly will create visuals that will also help in remembering. Particularly for Maths trigonometric formulas. This will significantly reduce your load in boards as you would just need to brief up using this list and you will be done for board Maths and most of Chemistry.

Find your own way of balancing boards with JEE Mains using these pointers.

Do not completely neglect the preparation of boards or do not entirely focus on boards. Study as much as required for you to get in the top 20 percentile.

Study thoroughly for boards keeping in mind that you are preparing for JEE Mains this helps improve your confidence also if you study for boards properly about 60% of the syllabus of JEE Mains will already be completed. After the boards immediately start working on the 11th class syllabus.

How to do Time management in lockdown for IITJEE Preparation

In this pandemic situation, everything is becoming very tough and for the students preparing for IITJEE they are also facing the problem due to changed mode of teaching, studying environment, lack of resources and many more things due to which aspirants are facing difficulty. At the end of the day, students think that they have too much time today because of various reasons.
In this pandemic situation, all the offline mode of teaching converted to online mode and this is also new for many students. Many schools have also started teaching online and these types of situations are not going to end in the coming months. So it is better for us to learn how to manage time in this situation and not affect the studies very much. Because whatever happens there is a very famous saying in English
"THE SHOW MUST GO ON"
Here I am going to give you tips for the management of time this crisis situation. READ ONN!

1.)Coaching time is also a self-study time-Every student preparing for IITJEE is taking online classes of 4 to 6 hours daily. But you can use this hour as self-study time. You must have noticed that teacher is not always explaining the concepts but after that, he will also give you some question to solve there only(during the class), so give full attention while he was teaching and solve the question there like you attempt during the test. During the lecture, many students leave the questions thinking that he will solve later and trust me you are doing a mistake if you are leaving the questions asked during the class. This will improve the instant thinking ability which is very important skills required for the students preparing for JEE.

2.)Home Work- Homework is an important part of the time management these days. If you have 6 to 8 hours of total self-study time then give equal time to all the subjects. Don't stick to a specific subject/topic or which you like the most because if any subject/topic is weak because you have not given enough time to that particular subject/topic. You have very limited time and you have to do all of three subjects in this only. Don't miss the homework any day, homework is the tool which checks how much you learned about the topic taught today, So if you are not able to do homework then you have not understood the topics very well. Try to understand the topic again and ask the doubt the next day only, don't pile up your doubts about homework because it is the basic thing.

3.)Revision-When you finish any topic/chapter you know everything at that particular time but after some months you slowly start losing the concepts from your mind and if you study again it will take the same time when you have studied topic in the beginning. The regular revision will boost your confidence very high. Yes, it is not possible to revise all the thing every day but you can revise some topics every day give some time after homework to revision it is as important as the homework and when the syllabus is at the end you will feel that you know the things which were taught at the beginning of the preparation. So revise periodically if you want not too much pressure in the last of the time.

4.) Sleep-Your body needs an ample amount of time to recharge again. So sleep is very important. Scientifically 6 to 7 hours is the standard sleeping time. And this hour is enough also if you are sleeping more than 7 hours then surely you are wasting your time. Small power naps like 30minutes power nap in the day time can recharge your body.6 hours sleep at night and 30 minutes power nap in day is perfect. Set your biological sleeping time according to your examination time. Some students study whole night and sleep till 12 o clock, this is a very bad habit because your JEE exam is going to happen in the day time and if you are habituated to study at night then your body will feel sleepy during the exam. So never sleep during the real exam hours.

5.)Relevant materials- Go through the JEE syllabus from their official website and study according to that. Sometimes in coaching also they teach very irrelevant topics which are not in the syllabus. This does nothing but wastes your time. Do NCERT, previous year(some topics are also excluded from previous years also). Don't go for fancy names or foreign writers book in peer pressure.

6.)Small Targets-Make small targets. Don't think that you will solve 100 questions of the same topic in a day. Solve 20 questions and solve with complete focus. Students who completely rely on self-study set very big targets and frustrate after some time if you are not able to complete the target. So make small targets and after completing it make another target. Small targets will also increase motivation.

Conclusion-If you follow the above tips and work hard you will crack IITJEE with flying colours. If you have any doubt you can contact or leave a comment we will try to resolve the issue.

Benefits of Physical Exercise/Activity during JEE Preparation

Benefits of Physical Exercise during JEE Mains and Advance Preparation

Nowadays, in this tech-savvy situation where everything is available online, students end up isolating themselves from everything in a room with minimal human contact, this affects their brain activity and might also lead to depression or poorer results. Even if there is a lot of syllabi to be covered and you can't waste a minute without studying, taking out at least 30 mins a day is not more to ask. This will really help you not only in the examination but also in life.

If you want to make your body and mind sound then.....READ ON!

Physical activities have now become a necessity. Few of its benefits are:

1)Stress Remover- It helps in reducing the tremendous amount of stress. Staying closed in 4 four walls certainly is not motivating but change on scene and place fills you with freshness and vigour to solve even tougher problems with greater ease.

2) Blood Circulation-Doing physical activity releases hormones that help in reducing stress, also it increases blood circulation in the body allowing more oxygen to infuse. This increases the efficiency of the brain as you would be able to do much more work at the same time.

3) Skill development-It develops a skill, an interest something you will you up to in the day, that will keep you going with your tight schedule.

4) Learn how to work in Group-Playing with others you get to interact with a lot more people without much effort and this helps you gain confidence and lifts up your mood. Even small talks might be encouraging.

5) Make Responsible-It inculcates a sense of responsibility and helps you gain sportsman spirit because JEE is not the end your or any other's life is much bigger than this small exam.

5 Tips during attempting JEE Mains exam

JEE Mains is one of the biggest exams for millions of the students every student is dreaming to get selected in the good college in the country. And your future college is decided by the three hours of this exam. If you want to crack the exam with flying colours and want to fetch maximum efficiency then you should follow some strategy.
If you want to know some very useful strategy then Read ONN!

41% of the JEE mains paper is easy and the rest of the paper is medium and tough. So you can easily score 41 per cent marks without any difficulty and it is completely doable.

1.)Always start with chemistry-It is suggested to start the paper from chemistry(although if you are comfortable and confident in other subjects then you can start). There is a reason why chemistry because it is very less time taking and you will realize in 20 minutes you are able to solve the more than 15 questions which will boost your confidence level very high and confidence is very much needed during this exam. In chemistry also solve first organic and inorganic chemistry(most of the questions are straight from NCERT) because in these questions you don't need to solve much in less than a minute you will be able to solve the single question. After then you can go for physical chemistry.

2.)Go for your favourite Subject- After doing the chemistry go for your favourite subject. Because nowhere after 40 minutes you will need your strong part to play.So identify your strong subject either physics or maths you can go for either of them. See JEE Mains Exam is like T20 match it doesn't matter which player is scoring how much runs winning and losing ultimately depend on the overall score. So in JEE Mains also it doesn't matter which subject you are doing 2nd only that matters how much you score.

3.)Identify the easy ones- In every subject there are 10 to 12 questions which are completely easy or I can say it is like put the value in formula and get the answer. So don't think that you will study only any two subjects for the exam if you doing this then you defiantly decreasing your overall marks. So if you don't like any subject even you can score 40 + marks in Mains just you have to remember formulas. This will help you to get 30+ questions correct in minimum time.

4.)Strategy for Mathematics- Mathematics is difficult for many students but if you follow some sequence then you will easily score well in mathematics. Please follow the following strategy-
  • Check the options first-If you see the options after reading the question immediately then you can save your time. I am not saying that solve the questions only with the help of options and this is not practical also. But checking the options just after the reading the question can help you to minimizing the time.
  • Know Your basics-JEE Mains exam basically want to know your basic fundamentals. So you should know your basics right. They are not going to ask you the advance level problem. For eg. Sequence and series chapter is very tough for JEE Advance but for JEE Mains it has very less syllabus.
  • The trick of Substitution-In Mathematics Substitution technique is very useful. You can smartly substitute some value and try to figure out the final answer.
  • Intelligent observation-By observing the question very carefully you can guess the answer. For eg in coordinate geometry by drawing the graph you can guess the nature of the answer.
  • Remember Important results-There are some important results in each of the chapter of each subject which came through derivation. You don't have to remember the derivation but you have to remember the results. Sometimes they ask questions directly from the results. for eg in sequence and series, you should remember the results of sigma r, sigma r square etc.
  • Practice Tests-ultimately you have to give exam in the pressurized environment. And to practice this environment you have to give the test paper continuously. If you are giving the test on a periodic interval then things will become smooth for you and you will not feel pressure at all o the final day.
Remember don't feel pressured in the exam hall.everyone is knows the basics but due to examination environment, very few people are able to crack it. Always remember you can do it.

Conclusion - If you Practice well, trust yourself and work hard then you will crack the JEE and reach in IIT's

How to overcome depression and develop self-motivation

I have often encountered students feeling depressed for not being able to achieve or perform as per their expectations, which results in further poor results, and thus the cycle continues. I being an iitian myself have felt depressed and left out while preparing for JEE in my 12th. This period is very crucial and plays an important factor in shaping the future of many bright minds, nonetheless if one is unable to crack this exam does not imply that he/she has no chance at a better future or is not smart enough.

Certainly, keeping oneself motivated and consistent effort for your goals is what matters the most in these tough times.

Here are a few tips on how to overcome depression and keep yourself motivated

1)  One of the major reason might be depressed with your poor performance, and usually, you term your performance poor relative to your friend who performed better, or the student who used to score lower than you but have scored better than you this time. But these are ups and downs of life. Sometimes you score better than others sometimes not. It's situational too. Compete with yourself, set your aims to perform better than the last time you performed. This will help you increase your growth graph upwards.

2) Many times, you would have lot of work pending and you take a longer break than intended like watching a movie or spent time shopping or play video games. Later regretting your decision you would start cursing yourself and start feeling like a failure or stupid or unworthy or low. But instead of wasting time on cursing yourself, use that time in completing your tasks rather. The sense of completion of even one task will give you satisfaction and you would feel a lot better.

3) When you randomly pick up a topic and in middle decide that another topic has higher weightage so start reading it. Later you weren't able to read both the topics and get frustrated. So, plan beforehand and study in an organized way. It will also save your time, which was otherwise wasted every time to think about which topic to study next. You can make weekly or monthly plans too.

4) Often when you get confused in certain topic questions, get demotivated and finally start ignoring them as you anyway won't get marks for it. But that's not true. in JEE where about 16-20 lakh students appear every year, the addition of even one mark will boost your ranks to thousands. So, put some extra efforts to understand that topic, it will also give a sense of motivation as you would have conquered one of your weaknesses.

5) If you have some backlog due to any reason, do not leave it to pile. If you leave those topics unattended it will soon become a large pile of topics because everything is interlinked in JEE. Then you will sit back and start wondering how it started and try to take them up in one go. That won't happen and eventually, you will lose interest in them. Therefore, do not waste any more time pondering and start taking them up topic-wise along with regular topics. This will help you cover them up though slowly. Completion of even one topic will give strength to complete the others.

6) Sit and analyze your mistakes, you will a lot more from them than you will from simply reading the text. If you don't sit and analyze what you did wrong, next time in a similar question you commit the same mistake and soon you will get irritated by those questions.

7) Don't be too harsh on yourself, like if you didn't score as expected you don't need to push yourself to study against your will. It will only affect your efficiency and accuracy that will cause a downfall in your growth graph and again you push yourself more irritated than before. This will only dishearten you. Accept your mistakes. It's ok if you didn't score this time, give yourself a treat, and try harder next time.

8) Take regular breaks and keep awarding yourself with little things like chocolate or one hour of a video game or anything you like that of course won't distract you. It will keep you motivated and fill you with freshness to prepare better.

9) Often you might get demotivated now and then seeing a lot of syllabi or lose interest thinking it won't be helpful in the future. But try to see the bigger picture, how your studying now would affect life in five years, how smoothly your college life will go if you succeed this and many more fascinating thoughts that get you going.

Keeping yourself motivated is essential for improving your performance and maintaining your interest in studies.

Hope you find this article motivating. These tips will not only help you ace in JEE but also help you in succeeding in life.

How to study Physical chemistry for JEE Mains and Advance

How to study Physical chemistry for JEE Mains and Advance?

Physical chemistry deals with the physical and chemical properties of matter. It is quite similar to mathematics and physics in developing underlying principles of chemistry. It observes and explains the physical and chemical properties of matter.
It is the major part to score well in JEE Mains and Advance.

If you want to get about the studying technique. Read ONN.......

First Get the syllabus here...

UnitImportant Chapters
Unit 1Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry
Unit 2States of Matter
Unit 3Atomic Structure
Unit 4Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure
Unit 5Chemical Thermodynamics
Unit 6Solutions
Unit 7Equilibrium
Unit 8Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry
Unit 9Chemical Kinetics
Unit 10Surface Chemistry

1.)Calculations- In Physical chemistry, we lot os calculation and lots of calculation may also lead to silly mistakes. You even know about the concepts, theory and how to solve but while calculating you do mistakes. So learn the formulas with very keen attention and with units also. Units are very important. The unit may indicate you that your final answer is correct or not.for eg you get the answer in unit per mole but the required answer needed per number of a gram. So if you are writing with the unit you will immediately realize that you have done some mistake that's why you are not getting the correct unit.
Avoid the use of a calculator during the question-solving.

2.)Feel the concepts-It is very important to connect the concepts to real life. For eg in solid states, there are spheres in a cubic system so you can imagine corners of your room like the cubic system and visualise. Feel the questions if you feel numerical then you will also enjoy while solving it.

3.)Practice-In physical chemistry you will get the concept very easily because there is not very much concepts available but here you have to practice a lot. Start practising the question papers from the NCERT exemplar and then solve the materials or books you have available. And at last, also give a try to the previous year because this is the thing which will boost your confidence. Questions on topics like atomic structure and chemical bonding are really important and come every year in JEE examination. Hence, students must prepare a table covering essential data to be used.

4.)Stay Relevant-Many books have so many things which are not in the syllabus and students give time to them also. So know your syllabus very well and study only those topics which are relevant and coming in your JEE Exam. Even if your coaching is teaching the topics which are not in the syllabus leave it because you have already very little time. So don't deviate from your syllabus.

5.)Capture All-Don't leave any chapter. Many times JEE ask very easy questions from small topics. for example surface chemistry is a very easy and extremely small topic and you will notice I previous year you will must get some questions from these small topics. You should pay extra attention to electrochemistry particularly relating to cell reactions, EMF, Oxidation-reduction half cells and standard potentials.

Conclusion - If you Practice well, trust yourself and work hard one year is a very good time to crack the JEE and reach in IIT's

How to prepare for JEE Mains ans Advance in 1 year

How to prepare for JEE In one Year?

Many of the students have the similar questions.

Didn't study well in 11th class, Can I clear IITJEE in one year?

Well, I will answer it, but first, see the reasons why students are not able to study in class 11th.
Reasons-
  • There may be a health problem.
  • There may be family issues.
  • Enjoyed a lot. like bunked class, addicted to social media, addicted to gaming etc.(this is the reasons in most of the cases)
  • There may be bad teachers or coaching or note proper guidance.
Now I would like to answer the question.
Yes, You can clear the IITJEE in one year, but........

Read ONN...

1.)Be Passionate and focused-You have to avoid all type of distractions including mobile phones, social media, movies, gaming etc. Be honest with yourself no one is going to watch you while you study. Don't study to show someone that you are studying so many hours study to understand the concept and solve the questions. One must have a constant dedication throughout the year to get into IIT.

  • Concepts/topics that are complicated which may eventually bore you should be studied when you are most active
  • Concepts which are easier can be studied after a hectic day from school
  • Attempt mock tests on weekends to know the level of your understanding

Both the above points depend on one most important factor which is interest. This is something you will have to develop so you can study effortlessly for the IITJEE.

2.)Getting Problems in the concepts of 12th?-Students who didn't study well in the class 11th must get problems in class 12th and it is obvious don't get panic. you can do both of it at the same time. Do the following-

  • Prepare 11th clas topics first-See, you are in class 12th or pass out now so your brains are also more developed than last year.So you can prepare the class 11th topic simultaneously.make the time table. I am giving you an example of the time table to follow. You can make yourself ou also you can follow in the same order.

3.)Make Schedule-Remember You have only 12 Month and you have to do work of 24th months in these 12th months. So without a schedule, it should be very difficult to make it.For example, before starting any topic from class 12 Syllabus, you should first understand the concepts from class 11 Syllabus for the same topic. Also, devote your extra time for learning important concepts from class 11 syllabus.

4.)Don't waste your time in overdoing- Don't continuously sit for the long hours it will increase the dullness and decrease the focus. So take small breaks but don't break the continuity. In addition, JEE preparation can get pretty intense therefore you should take time to distress. You can engage in light activities such as going for a short walk, listening to music, etc. It is important to remain both physically and mentally fit. Also, you should eat healthy food and exercise regularly.

Conclusion - If you Practice well, trust yourself and work hard one year is a very good time to crack the JEE and reach in IIT's.

Schooling while preparing for JEE | Advantages and Disadvantages of Dummy School

Schooling is an integral part of a student's life. It is here they develop their soft skills and build fundamentals. But the question here is, IS IT WORTH IT WHILE PREPARING FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMS IN 11th and12th?

There is no fixed answer to that, it depends on you how you are more comfortable and are able to grasp concepts.

In 2016, the Union Ministry of Human Resource (HRD Ministry) decided to not include Class XII marks as a determining factor in ranking for JEE admissions to undergraduate courses in various engineering colleges, with other parameters remaining the same. Though it will play an important factor in deciding the eligibility for admissions. So, it's not completely off the hook.

Here I have listed the XII board exam score for eligibility in various competitive exams for PCM:
1) JEE -  Candidates applying for admission through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) that regulates the seat allocation of IITs, IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs, must have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in their Class 12th or equivalent examination. Relaxation of 10% will be offered to candidates belonging to reserved categories. Thus, SC/ST/PwD category candidates must have secured at least 65% marks in the qualifying examination. (I have personally gone through the process and its only top 20 percentile that's considered for the general category!)

For more details, refer: JEE Mains website

2) KVPY - (for SX and SB stream) candidate must have secured a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology).

For more details, you may refer the official website of KVPY

3) BITSAT - The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.

For more details, refer: BITSAT website

So now you know that even though it is not a deciding factor in ranking but plays an important role in selection as one must satisfy these eligibility criteria to get a seat in respective colleges.
But the question remains the same what is preferable schooling for JEE preparation.

First, let me tell the advantages and disadvantages of joining dummy schools for the same.

Advantages:
1) You get much more time as compared to a student who is attending proper schooling and you are exempted from the burden of writing long practical file journals and completing the notebooks. Also, time wasted in wandering about and traveling from home to school and back to school is saved and can be invested in practicing more.

2) You get your study group. In your coaching institute, you get connected with the same preferences and goals as yours. This increases your motivation towards excellence and will help you improve with healthy competition while in school you get people with varied interest and seriousness, that might lead to discouragement and laziness(seeing others resting). These 2-3 years are crucial and there is no space for laziness.

3) You can study at your own pace. Usually schools students to have to study 2 topics simultaneously - one at school and other at coaching (since coaching institutes have rushed to complete the courses usually by November in 12th standard while school teacher takes their own slow pace), this leads to divided attention and you will not be able to focus on one topic.

Disadvantages:
1) You won't get holistic development. This may sound irrelevant, but this does affect you in the long run. managing all subjects and completing files participating in school fests, holding a position in student council, fun with friends all may not seem necessary but they do boost up your confidence and help you build your soft skills. After school, no one will give the pain to teach lessons of life, it assumed you already know them.

2) Also, the interaction with the coaching teacher is not the same as a school teacher. School may not provide you as much knowledge of the subject as coaching institutes but it does inculcate or give direction to your interests. They provide you a sense of responsibility and vision and make you aware of all the options that lie ahead. While coaching institutes make you focus on cracking IITs only. Also, they would not support you emotionally as your school teachers would.

Knowing these pros and cons of joining a dummy school will help you decide better keeping in mind your priorities and circumstances.

I personally recommend an integrated program wherein the coaching institute takes responsibility for teaching other courses too that are not a part of JEE. Nowadays, in this competitive world, where there is always someone doing better, I don't think you need to invest so much effort in managing school and coaching instead invest it in building your concepts. You may miss out on a few things, but that's the life you can't get everything without losing something. These focused efforts will ripe you results one day in any form.

Remember,
"Every minute you waste doing nothing, there is someone learning something a little more."
And JEE ranks change over 1000s for even one mark.
